The Best of Depeche Mode Volume 1 is the fifth compilation album by British group Depeche Mode. The album was released on 13 November 2006 by Mute Records (see 2006 in British music).[1] Other compilation albums by the band include Catching Up with Depeche Mode and People Are People (both North American-only releases) along with The Singles 81>85 and The Singles 86>98.
The current collection consists of selected Depeche Mode singles from their twenty-five year career. Along with two recent singles from the Playing the Angel album, a new song "Martyr" - recorded during the Playing the Angel sessions - is also included in this collection and was released as a single in late October 2006.
The album has sold over 1 million copies in Europe alone and has been awarded the IFPI Platinum Europe Award.

Limited edition copies of The Best of: Volume 1 (LCDMUTEL15) feature a bonus DVD titled The Best of Depeche Mode Videos. A few of the videos feature songs that were not on The Best Of, Volume 1 and a few of the songs on the album are not on the DVD. The cover has a pink flower rather than the white flower that the regular CDs have.[5]
The E.P.K. has commentary on all the singles that made it onto the CD release of The Best Of, Volume 1.
On March 16, 2007, The Best of Depeche Mode Videos was released on its own.
* First official release on DVD
** First official release period ("People Are People"'s regular video was not used in the original Some Great Videos release. None of the Exciter videos (or Enjoy the Silence 04) were publicly released prior to Best Of)
The Best of: Volume 1 shares a release scheme similar to the previous Depeche Mode compilation, The Singles 86>98. All the tracks are from previous albums, except for one: the new single "Martyr", which was released shortly before the compilation. Similarly, in 1998, "Only When I Lose Myself" was released 3 weeks prior to The Singles 86>98. "Shake the Disease" and "It's Called a Heart" were also new when Depeche Mode released their first singles collection, The Singles (81-85), in 1985.
